Tubular solutions firm Vallourec has won a contract with BP Berau to supply corrosion resistant alloy pipes and VAM connections for the development of the Tangguh project, the first Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) offshore project, in Papua Barat province, Indonesia.
Vallourec will also provide its tubular management services and VAM field service, delivering technical support throughout the project lifecycle, from supply and installation to operational supervision.
The French firm said the contract confirms its technical expertise in addressing the complex challenges of offshore CCS projects, a strategically important area for global energy transformation.
Bertrand de Rotalier, Senior Vice-President New Energies, Project Line Pipe and Process for Vallourec, said the contract confirms the reliability, technical leadership, and long-term performance of its tubular solutions, as it continues to support customers in advancing decarbonisation.
BP and its partners approved a $7bn investment in the Tangguh Ubadari CCUS Compression project, set to unlock an estimated three trillion cubic feet of additional gas resources in Papua Barat, in November 2024.
Indonesia holds significant CCS potential, with estimates suggesting over 400 to 600 gigatonnes of CO2 storage capacity in depleted oil/gas fields and deep saline aquifers. The country aims to become a regional CCS hub, with around 15 projects underway to 2030, particularly in the Java and Bintuni basins, capitalising on a new regulatory framework.
