The United Arab Emirates is accelerating construction of a major new oil pipeline project designed to significantly expand crude export capacity via the port of Fujairah by 2027, strengthening the country’s ability to bypass the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed has directed Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to fast-track development of the West-East Pipeline project during a recent executive committee meeting.
The pipeline, which is already under construction, is expected to begin operations next year and will ultimately double the UAE’s oil export capacity through Fujairah, one of the world’s most important energy export hubs located on the Gulf of Oman.
The expansion is strategically significant as it will allow a substantially larger share of the UAE’s crude exports to avoid transit through the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow maritime chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass daily. The move comes amid continued geopolitical tensions in the region and growing emphasis on energy security and supply chain resilience.
The new infrastructure will complement ADNOC’s existing Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline (ADCOP), which currently transports crude oil from the Habshan fields in Abu Dhabi to Fujairah for export to international markets. Once expanded, the UAE will gain greater flexibility in routing exports to Asia and other global destinations while reducing exposure to potential shipping disruptions in the Gulf region.
The project is also expected to generate significant opportunities across the oil and gas supply chain, including pipeline systems, pumping stations, storage infrastructure, automation technologies, and flow control equipment such as valves, actuators, compressors, and industrial pumps.
The UAE continues to invest heavily in expanding its upstream production capacity, export infrastructure, and downstream capabilities as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading and most reliable energy exporters.
