Voith wins follow-on contract for pump-turbine modernization in Spain

Voith has secured a contract from Iberdrola Generación SA to modernize two additional pump-turbines at the Torrejón pumped-storage hydropower plant in Spain.
The award follows an ongoing upgrade programme at the facility, where Voith is currently modernizing pump-turbines 3 and 4. The latest contract covers the remaining units, pump-turbines 1 and 2, continuing the phased modernization of the plant.
Each of the two units has a generating capacity of 32.5 MW in turbine mode and 43 MW in pump mode. Work is scheduled to begin in 2027, with initial commissioning planned for 2028.
As part of the project, both units will be converted for variable-speed operation, matching the modernization approach used for turbines 3 and 4. Voith will adapt key plant components to support the new operating mode, enabling the units to respond more flexibly to changing grid conditions.
The upgrade is intended to enhance the long-term performance and operational flexibility of the pumped-storage facility. The project is also expected to strengthen the role of hydropower in supporting grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources.
“Such modernizations require a deep understanding of the plant and its integration into the overall system,” says Andi Schmiedel, head of proposal at Voith Hydro. “We look forward to contributing our proven expertise here and continuing to implement the modernization of the site together with Iberdrola.”
