ABB upgrades BPCL’s 935-km Vadinar–Bina Pipeline

ABB India has completed a critical modernisation programme for Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s (BPCL) Vadinar–Bina Pipeline (VBPL), upgrading automation, monitoring and cyber security systems without any operational shutdowns. Spanning 935 km, the cross-country pipeline supplies 7.80 million metric tonnes per annum to BPCL’s Bina refinery and plays a vital role in India’s energy security amid rising demand.
The project involved a full upgrade to the ABB Ability™ SCADAvantage system, replacement of 35 Remote Terminal Units across pumping, pigging and sectionalising valve stations, and the installation of new SCADA servers at Vadinar and Bina. ABB also strengthened cyber resilience through network prote tion, system hardening and centralised monitoring, alongside failover capability and disaster recovery servers at both locations.
“We are proud to have partnered with ABB on the modernisation of the Vadinar-Bina pipeline, completed seamlessly without any shutdowns,” said Mr Rajshekhar S, Head (Pipelines), Vadinar Bina Pipeline, BPCL. “The project strengthened our cyber security and system resilience, greatly enhancing the reli ability of the entire pipeline infrastructure.”
G Balaji, SVP, Energy Industries, ABB India, said the execution without disruption ensured continuous flow and uninterrupted refinery operations. ABB has collaborated with BPCL on multiple projects, providing automation solutions across around 66 per cent of its pipeline infrastructure.
