900 slurry angle valves for NALCO alumina refinery in India

Ampo Poyam Valves will supply 900 slurry angle severe service valves in 2020 for National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), which is one of the largest integrated bauxite, alumina and aluminium power complexes in India. The refinery has planned a revamp in the existing “High Rate Tailing Thickener (HRT)” unit, which plays a vital role in bauxite tailings separating diverse residues, and consequently, new slurry application valves will be installed here.
Furnace Fabrica India Limited was awarded the engineering, construction and procurement contract for this revamp and it has relied on Ampo Poyam Valves for the design and manufacture of 900 slurry angle slurry, bayonet, three way, straight through and lift check valves.
Ampo Poyam Valves’s expertise and know-how have allowed developing an optimal solution in terms of materials, design and valve performance, considering the heavy slurry service at the refinery.
All those valves will be manufactured in Ampo India, which comprises an area of approximately 15,000 square meters in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), India and which includes a valve assembly, testing, painting and packing facilities. Here, Ampo India is able to manufacture up to 72” size valves.
Ampo Poyam Valves has been supplying custom-made valves to Alumina refineries since 1978 and it is currently considered a world leader in slurry angle valves. Our wide reference list in this market and the excellent performance of our alumina valves has enabled Ampo to strengthen its collaboration with the National Aluminium Company (NALCO) in India, being currently a regular supplier of critical valves for their existing plants.
The NALCO Alumina Refinery is located at Damanjodi, Odisha, approximately 14 km from the bauxite mine at Panchpatmali. The mined-out bauxite is transported from captive mine to refinery by a 14.6 KM long single-light multi-curve 1800 tonnes per hour (TPH) capacity cable belt conveyor. The alumina produced is transported to aluminium smelter at Angul (Odisha) and to Vizag (Andhra Pradesh) port by rail.
The present capacity of the alumina refinery is 22.75 lakh TPA. Alumina produced is used to meet NALCO’s requirements for production of primary aluminium at the smelter. The surplus alumina is sold to third parties in the export markets.
