A major modernisation project at the Alexandria West wastewater treatment plant in Egypt has been completed with the installation of two high-efficiency Sewatec SPN pumps supplied by KSB.
The upgrade aims to safeguard the long-term functionality of the city’s critical wastewater infrastructure, operated by the Alexandria Sanitary Drainage Company (ASDC).
Integrating the new pumps into the existing plant presented significant logistical and engineering challenges due to their size and weight — each unit weighing around ten tonnes.
KSB said the challenge was integrating the new pumps in the existing infrastructure – with consideration of the structural conditions on site and the enormous mass of the pump sets. With each pump weighing about ten tonnes, conventional installation was not an option. Instead, the pump sets were separated into volute casing and back pull-out unit at the plant in Alexandria, where the components were installed and then reassembled.
Each pump delivers a maximum flow rate of 9,000 litres per second and a head of about 100 metres. Manufactured at KSB’s German facility in Halle (Saale) and delivered within nine months, the pumps feature dual-speed electric motors for enhanced energy efficiency. Their large free passages also improve reliability when handling raw wastewater.
