Genex Power Limited has announced that its Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project has the potential to be built with an increased capacity of 450 MW. Previous reports contained a capacity of 330 MW, and the company released a market update April 28 indicating that the design layout of the project has evolved substantially since the pre-feasibility concept was initially identified.Work will now progress to the detailed design phase.
The option chosen involves the construction of a new “turkey’s nest” shallow dam upper reservoir on top of Eldridge Pit North Rock Dump. An embankment 5 to 6 meters high will be built around the existing dump to create the dam. The new upper reservoir will be lined with high-density polyethylene. The elevation of the upper reservoir will be 35 to 40 meters higher than the other options studied.
Completion of the feasibility study is targeted for the third quarter of 2016. Earlier this year, Genex Power reported the plant would be commissioned in 2018 and was anticipated to cost US$282 million.
